Santa Maria Antiqua:“The Sistine chapel of the 8th century in context"

Santa Maria Antiqua - detail from the Palimpsest Wall

In 2000, the British School at Rome and the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome organised the conference “Santa Maria Antiqua al Foro Romano cento anni dopo” (Santa Maria Antiqua in the Roman Forum one hundred years later) to mark the centenary of the start of the excavations.

Now, the two aforementioned institutions, whose collaboration is tied to the history of this church from the time of its discovery in 1900,  are jointly organising a new conference aimed at developing and promoting further advances in the research on such a building, including the scientific acquisitions gained throughout the course of the long season of the interventions of restoration, now nearing completion,  to which the monument was subject.
